Recruiting volunteers.

Free resources to help nonprofits, NGOs, government programs, community organizations and others quickly get the volunteers they need.

All of these are written by me, Jayne Cravens. These are based not on theory but actual practice: this advice is what I myself follow in recruiting volunteers, and it's been altered over the years as trends and tools come and go. I also network regularly with other managers of volunteers and I volunteer myself. Unlike other consultants, my advice comes much more from practice than theory.

Please note: volunteer recruitment is NOT the first step in involving volunteers. It's not the second step either. And if you don't have the fundamentals of volunteer engagement and management in place, your recruitment activities will result in your creating very bad publicity for your organization. You will successfully recruit dozens, hundreds, even thousands of people who will be disappointed by the experience of attempting to volunteer with your organization, and these people will tell their friends, online and in-person.

Recruitment is, for the most part, quite easy. And volunteer recruitment should always be one of the last steps in engaging volunteers.

Recruiting volunteers

Recruiting volunteers is NOT the first step in setting up a volunteer engagement scheme. It's NOT the first thing to be done to involve volunteers. In fact, I believe it is the LAST step, one you do after you have defined your mission statement for your volunteer engagement, created assignments, written policies and procedures, defined how you will evaluate your volunteer engagement at the six month and one-year mark, mapped how your volunteer in-take processes will work, and trained staff that will work with volunteers.
