I Need Your Help to Save the Delta Queen!

 
Cities along the Ohio River and Mississippi River, including my birthplace of Henderson, Kentucky, are being punished by the U.S. Congress. Please write your US Senators and your US Representative to stop the maddness! Use this Save the Delta Queen letter to write your own letter urging your elected officials to support the Delta Queen bills in Congress - H.R. 3852 in the House and S. 3498 in the Senate.

The Delta Queen is an American sternwheel steamboat, and a beautiful sight to behold. She is a registered historic treasure of the Department of the Interior and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, she is a National Historic Landmark and also a member of the National Maritime Hall of Fame. Since 1968 her operating exemption acknowledging her wood super structure has been granted 9 consecutive times by both Democrats and Republicans, she was good enough and safe enough to host three presidents and a princess. Despite all this, the Chairman of the Senate Commerce and Transportation Committee and the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee won't even let the Delta Queen extension go to a vote. However, Congress did find the time to exempt a foreign owned cruise line, with foreign built ships from the Jones Act, passed in 1886, which protects American maritime jobs.  Due to Congress' exemption, the United States Coast Guard estimated that 900 - 1,200 foreign workers will be employed by that cruise line in 2008. In contrast, on November 1, 2008 more than 120 American jobs lost their jobs directly -- and the impact on the small businesses that benefit from the revenue she brings to many small towns in a dozen states, like my home town, have yet to be felt. We all will lose a little bit of our American cultural heritage if the Delta Queen stays docked. 

Find your state's US Senators (you have two), and your US Representative. Again: use this Save the Delta Queen letter to write your own letter urging your elected officials to support the Delta Queen bills in Congress - H.R. 3852 in the House and S. 3498 in the Senate.
