Theatre Tour in England
December 1987 - January 1988

For just over two weeks, starting in December 1987, right after Christmas, into January 1988, I went to London with four other students from the Western Kentucky University Theater and Dance Department, as well as students and faculty from the University of Kentucky. Our goal: to see as much theater and historical sites as we could possibly pack into the time. We got a full class credit for going. The final was us spending time in our hotel pub, drinking beer (we were all legal over there), drunkenly discussing the productions we'd seen with our theater professor, Dr. Leonard.

It. Was. Awesome. This was the first international trip I ever did, and it was absolutely life-changing.

Here's a list of the 10 theatre production I saw on this trip, including the names of the actors and directors (some big names - though some weren't big yet, like Kenneth Branaugh).

In addition to an incredible amount of theatre we saw, we also went to historic sites in Stratford upon Avon, Dover, Stonehenge and Canterbury, and walked a lot around London. I don't think we slept at all.

One of my favorite times on the trip was the day everyone else went to some palace somewhere - I forget where - and I stayed behind and walked around London by myself. I just needed to be able to have time to not be in a group and, instead, just go wherever I wanted to go and stay wherever I wanted to for as long as I wanted to. It was one of my favorite days of the trip - just navigating the city by myself, feeling so comfortable so far from Kentucky, seeing things I'd seen in movies and TV shows all my life - and so much more. As I walked around London, I knew I wanted to travel, see other countries, and be a foreigner whenever possible. It was a magical day (except for the wind, which almost blew me down a tube tunnel).

See pictures from this incredible trip to London (and beyond) - though I'm not sure they really show how incredible it was. They do show how really bad my hair was...

Have I been back? Why, yes, I have, in 2001, 2004 and 2007. I'm due for another trip!
