Tech Tools for Scheduling or Tracking Online Volunteers

The Virtual Volunteering Wiki was developed in association with The Last Virtual Volunteering Guidebook.

There are a vast number of tech tools that can be used to schedule volunteers for work, or to track their progress. Some software is for tracking employees can can be adapted for volunteers. Some is designed specifically for volunteers. It's impossible to list all of this software because it changes regularly, and many tools that can be used to schedule and track volunteers never uses the word volunteer.

This resource can help you know what to look for in such software - remember that what you need may be different than other organizations, and what one organization considers best isn't at all what would be right for you.

Also see this report: the results of a global survey regarding software used for volunteer management (in PDF) from 2012, by Rob Jackson and Jayne Cravens, which revealed how widespread Internet-mediated volunteering, episodic volunteering, and other volunteering that did not require long-term commitment or onsite-only involvement is among a variety of organizations worldwide. Remember that many tools aren't designed for volunteers, but could still be used for such. When looking for such software, remember that employee software can often work well for volunteer situations. And many software programs can be used in conjunction with each other - one tool to schedule, one tool to report, for instance.
