- Please describe the kinds of volunteer activities these
direct contact volunteers provide to your organization:
- We are experimenting with online tutoring as
a supplement to face-to-face tutoring. We would also like to extend this
to include distance learning mentors who would guide students through
theprocess of preparing for the GED. Finally, we are trying (not very
successfully) to convince our local Department of Social Service to support
an online mentoring program for welfare-to-work famiilies - but they think
we are way out and I'm not sure if we will succeed here.
- How did you recruit the volunteers you involve(d) via
the Internet?
- Through a technology inservice for existing tutors,
through notices on our webpage on the website of TeamTeach a technololgy
project in our area supported by United Way and IBM.
- How did you screen/orient the volunteers you involve(d)
via the Internet?
- We really haven't
- How do you supervise and recognize/reward online
volunteers for their contributions?
- We aren't that far
- Have you ever surveyed these online volunteers about
their experiences with your organization?
- Not yet
- What factors in your organization have promoted the
success of your virtual volunteering program?
- Staff are pretty technology literate and so
overworked that we were open to any and all ways of expanding volunteer
involvement - we are also in an area where most of our volunteers work and
wanted a way to reach them that was time-efficient
- What factors in your organization have impeded the
success of your virtual volunteering program?
- No outside financial support, lots of skepticism from
potential outside agency partners with whom we must work
- Please add any other comments you would like to send to
us:
- We'd like to learn more and know of any examples of online
mentoring with welfare recipients or distance learning focused on the lower
end of the educational spectrum
